Features

What the app does

Every feature in the app today, and all of them are free. What we are working on sits at the bottom, kept apart. Each group has a detail page with the numbers and the limits.

Detail pages

Below is the summary. Each detail page explains where the feature is in the app, how it works, the real numbers and what it does not do.

How it compares with other motorcycle apps: comparison with Calimoto, Kurviger, OsmAnd, DMD2, Wikiloc and more.

Offroad navigation

Tablet navigation by day: turn in 1.2 km, roadbook, elevation profile coloured by surface, gradient of the next 500 m.
Phone navigation (Italian interface): big turn card, speed, limit and three roadbook boxes.
  1. 0.0

    Big turn card

Arrow, distance and manoeuvre in large type, one number at the bottom (distance to go and arrival time), three buttons at most. Built for the handlebar mount, in sunlight, with gloves.

  2. 1.2

Roadbook while navigating and full screen

Three boxes, next note only, or hidden. One tap goes full screen: big distances on the left and the manoeuvre on the right, like a paper roadbook.

  3. 3.8

    Rerouting without a signal

Leave the route and the phone recalculates towards the remaining stops, with the same surface and difficulty choices.

  4. 5.1

    Voice guidance

English and Italian, with the phone's own voices: manoeuvres, closed tracks, speed cameras, rerouting, arrival. All, alerts only or mute.

  5. 7.4

    Speed, limit and speed cameras

Big speed readout and the speed-limit sign when OpenStreetMap knows it; red above the limit. Fixed speed cameras flagged with distance and limit (mobile cameras and average-speed checks are not included).

  6. 9.6

    Made for the bike

Head Up or North Up with compass, zoom that follows your speed, a map that ignores accidental taps while moving, guidance with the phone locked, screen kept on.

Automatic day and night with sunrise and sunset computed on the phone; portrait or landscape with a side panel.

  7. 9.7

    Last fuel

Set tank, consumption and reserve in Settings › Fuel range: the summary tells you where to fill up before stretches with no fuel stations, and while riding a box and the voice warn you 15 km ahead. Off until you set the tank.

  8. 9.8

    Back before dark

If you would arrive after sunset or less than 30 minutes before it, the summary says so and offers the latest time to leave, "Shorten the loop" or "Faster on Road". While riding, a warning if arrival slips past sunset.

  9. 9.9

    Weather along the route

Rain, temperature, wind and thunderstorms where you will be, at the time you will be there: on the profile and in one line of the summary, such as "Light rain from km 40 to 64, around 10:44 · 12 °C", with mud risk on dirt. MET Norway data; on by default, switch it off in Settings › Default route. Only the area, rounded to about 1 km, is sent.

  10. 10.0

    Elevation profile while riding

On phones too, under the map: profile coloured by surface, where you are and the climbing left. Show or hide it from the menu.

Rally roadbook

Training: roadbook only at full width, trip meter with corrections and large boxes.
Rally roadbook on a phone: boxes with distance, tulips, headings, surface, village symbol and steep sections.
Settings › Remote control: previous and next box, trip ±10 and ±100 m, reset partial and MARK, each with its assigned key (arrows, volume, page up and down, Play/Pause, Enter, Space).
  1. 10.2

    Boxes from your route

One box per junction, numbered, with total and partial distance, a tulip with the real side roads, exit heading in degrees (CAP), road name, surface, hazards ! !! !!! (steep climbs, closed tracks) and symbols for villages, fuel, gates and fords.

  2. 10.9

    Rally trip meter

Total and partial, −100, −10, +10, +100 m corrections, Reset and back to GPS. The current box follows the corrected trip.

  3. 11.4

    Training

On a tablet the roadbook sits to the right of the map; "Hide map" leaves the roadbook alone, to learn navigating like in a rally. On a phone the rally roadbook is full screen from the ☰ menu.

  4. 11.8

    Handlebar remote

A Bluetooth remote that works as a keyboard: next and previous box, trip ±10 and ±100 m, reset the partial. In Settings › Remote control, press the key you want for each action; on Android the volume keys work too.

  5. 12.0

    Printable PDF

From "My tracks": 145 or 150 mm roll, A4 or A5, with vector tulips and data attribution. Polly's own symbols with the usual meaning, not the official FIM set.

  6. 12.3

    Editor and field survey

"Edit roadbook" from "My tracks": tulips, notes, symbols and photos for every box. While riding, "MARK" (from the remote too) saves dangers, fords and gates; photos are taken when stopped and the trip can be corrected.

  7. 12.6

    GPX and OpenRally

Export the roadbook to GPX or OpenRally cross-country 1.0.3 and import it back, as well as PDF.

Offline maps and topo map

Offline maps: installed region and regions available to download with their size.
Offline maps on a tablet, in two columns.
  1. 13

    All 20 Italian regions

Download them one by one (from about 130 MB for Molise to about 940 MB for Lombardy; Liguria about 280 MB). Downloads continue in the background, resume when interrupted and are verified before installing. On first launch Polly suggests the region you are in.

  2. 14

    Several regions together

Routes, stops, loops and rerouting cross every region you have installed.

  3. 17

    Topo map

Contour lines, hillshade, tracks coloured by difficulty, protected areas, peaks, passes, fords, barriers, springs and huts. A switch brings back the plain map.

  4. 19

    Search and points of interest

Search towns and places offline. On the map: viewpoints, passes, huts and bivouacs, water and fuel, toggled on the fly.

  5. 20

    Photos of places

Many point-of-interest cards have a freely licensed photo from Wikimedia Commons, with author and licence. It comes with the region's map and shows offline.

  6. 22

    View the road

Long-press a point: name, surface, difficulty and, if it is closed, why. With a connection, Street View, Mapillary and OpenStreetMap are one tap away.

Planning

Three routes compared in a table: time, distance, dirt and climb, with surface strip and elevation profile.
Home screen: Where shall we ride? with Ride somewhere, Loop, Nearby and Trip.

Pick the surface (Road, Mixed, Offroad) and dirt difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard). Choices apply to this ride only, without changing your settings.

  1. 25

    Ride somewhere

A to B with stops you can add, remove and reorder. Up to three alternatives in a table, "Dirt", "Balanced" and "Fastest", with time, distance, dirt, climb, surface strip and elevation profile.

  2. 28

    Honest about the surface

Dirt without details is marked as uncertain ("2 km uncertain"), with the steepest gradient and the distance above 15 % and 25 %. On Easy, a warning if there is very steep dirt.

  3. 31

    Loop

"I've got two hours": by time or distance, start and finish in the same place, back on different roads where possible.

  4. 32

    Discover an area

On the home screen, under "Discover", "Area · 3 h": a quick road transfer, a dirt ride in the area at the difficulty you choose, back by road. Two or three options within your hours, with "Why here?".

  5. 33

    Roads you have never ridden

With "Prefer new roads" (off by default), loops and Discover an area recommend the option with the most km you have not ridden yet. Every result shows its km of new roads. It all stays on the phone.

  6. 35

    Road only, but good road

On the Road surface, the "Scenic" option looks for bends, minor roads, passes and viewpoints within 1.5 times the time, with no motorways, and tells you why it picked them. "Avoid motorways" applies everywhere, rerouting included.

  7. 38

    What's nearby

Towns, villages, castles, museums, nature, viewpoints and passes sorted by riding minutes, with "Take me here" and "Add as a stop".

  8. 42

    1–3 day trip

Back home or somewhere else, riding hours per day, interests, nights you pick or suggested where there is somewhere to stay. Each day is saved and navigated on its own.

  9. 43

    Motorcycle and rider profile

Maxi adventure, Medium adventure, Light enduro / light adventure, Road motorcycle or your own: it sets surface, maximum difficulty and motorways, and warns you about fords and, where the map knows, sand and mud.

Tracks and GPX

Track detail on a tablet: topo map and elevation profile side by side.
My tracks: saved, imported and recorded rides.
  1. 46

    Open a GPX or KML

From "Share" or "Open with", on iPhone and Android; a file with several tracks becomes several entries.

  2. 48

    Follow it your way

From the start, from the nearest point or in reverse: Polly takes you to the start and then guides you.

  3. 51

    My tracks

Planned, imported and recorded rides in one archive on the phone: elevation profile, surface by kilometre, rename, delete, export to GPX.

In detail: my tracks and GPX

Recording and telemetry

Recording sheet with time, distance and Calibrate the mount.
Free ride on a tablet with a dashboard: speed, average, max, altitude and climb, with speed and altitude charts.
  1. 55

    Record your ride

Free ride or while navigating, for hours and offline. Pause, resume, stop. If the phone dies, you recover the recording on restart.

  2. 58

    Ride numbers

Distance, duration, moving time, average and top speed, climb, how much dirt; compared with the planned route.

  3. 61

    Telemetry from the phone's sensors

Speed, braking, acceleration and estimated lean angle, with automatic mount calibration. End-of-ride report with a coloured track, highlights and charts. GPX and CSV export.

  4. 62

    Planned versus actual, diary

Record while navigating and the ride keeps the planned route: section-by-section comparison, off-route moments on the map and a diary with notes and photos.

  5. 63

    My roads

Your recorded rides draw the roads you have already ridden on the map: the "My roads" layer, off by default, in the layers menu. No account, nothing sent.

In detail: recording, telemetry and report charts

Safety and closures

Tablet navigation with the alert Restricted to motor vehicles in 250 m.
  1. 64

    Closed tracks: shown, not hidden

Magenta on the map, counted in every route, with an alert before (150, 300 or 500 m) and inside the section, also as a notification. You can ride them: the rider is responsible.

  2. 66

    Why it is closed

Forestry or farm road, motor-vehicle ban, hiking path, seasonal ban with dates, protected area: offline too. A ban and a permit have different wording and, when the source gives them, the authority, the act and its validity period. Permit-only sections count as closed when routing, to be safe.

  3. 66.5

Protected areas and Natura 2000 sites

EUAP protected areas (ISPRA) and Natura 2000 sites from the European Environment Agency, with name, code and type (SCI, SAC, SPA), on the topo map and in the restriction details.

  4. 67

Seasonal closures, for your ride date

Roads closed in winter or for some months: Polly checks the period against the ride date (day by day on trips) and warns in the summary and while riding, with an orange banner and voice.

  5. 68

    Clear warnings

On first launch: data may be incomplete, not all speed cameras are there, do not handle your phone while riding. Read them again any time.

  6. 69

    SOS by SMS

Up to 3 contacts in Settings › Safety › SOS contacts. The red SOS button is in the riding ☰ menu and on the recording sheet: 5 seconds to cancel, then a ready-made text opens with your position, time and recent path. You send it. It needs SMS coverage, not internet.

  7. 70.5

    Crash detection (trial)

Off by default. Once on, while navigating or recording it looks for a hard impact followed by a stop: an alarm with "I'M OK" and, after 60 seconds, the SOS opens, which you still send yourself. It is a trial: it can miss a crash or raise a false alarm.

In detail: restrictions, seasonal closures and ferries · SOS and crash detection
