Polly Track

Planning a ride

Several ways to start, all on the home screen: towards a destination, a loop, exploring a dirt area, somewhere nearby, or a trip of several days. The phone works everything out on its own, with no connection.

Ride somewhere, A to B

Tap "Ride somewhere" or search a place in "Where shall we ride?". Pick a start (GPS or a place) and a destination, then "Find routes". You get up to three alternatives in a table, with time, km, km of dirt and climb.

La Spezia to Varese Ligure, Offroad and medium dirt: Dirt recommended 1 h 25, 64 km, 9.3 km of dirt, 1,673 m climb; Balanced and Fastest below; surface strip and elevation profile.
Three alternatives to Varese Ligure: the "Recommended" row follows your surface.
Ride somewhere form: My location, Varese Ligure, "Add stop", surface Offroad, difficulty Medium, "Find routes".
The form, with "Add stop".
On iPad (Italian interface): the route to Varese Ligure on the map and, on the right, the table with time, km, dirt and climb and the elevation profile.
The same results on iPad, next to the map.

The alternatives

  • "Dirt": looks for more unpaved road. It can take up to 1.8 times the fastest route (1.6 with Mixed) and must add at least 2 km of dirt.
  • "Balanced" and "Fastest": less dirt, less time.
  • "Scenic", only with the Road surface: looks for bends, minor roads, passes and viewpoints, with no motorways, within 1.5 times the fastest time. The card explains the choice by counting passes, viewpoints and bends.

The "Recommended" row follows your surface: Offroad recommends "Dirt", Mixed "Balanced", Road "Scenic". If that row has at least 0.5 km of restricted road and another one has less, Polly recommends the other one.

Under the table you see the surface strip (asphalt yellow, dirt brown, restricted magenta), the elevation profile, the descent, the steepest gradient, km of motorway and km of restricted road. On the map the chosen route is orange on asphalt, dashed brown on dirt and dashed magenta on restricted sections; alternatives are grey.

Time on dirt is estimated with cautious speeds: 40 km/h on broken asphalt, 35 on compacted, 30 on gravel, 25 on earth, 15 on paths, 10 on nearly impassable surface.

From here: "Ride", "Save to My tracks", edit the ride, or "Change surface and difficulty" for this ride only (see Surface and difficulty).

Stops

With "Add stop" you add places to ride through. Remove them or drag to reorder. A point-of-interest card also has "Add as stop". There is no maximum number of stops.

Motorcycle and rider profile

If you have a profile, surface, difficulty and motorways start from it. The starting models are Maxi adventure, Medium adventure, Light enduro / light adventure and Road motorcycle, or a profile of your own. On the ride sheet you switch it with "Quickly change profile". Details are in Surface and difficulty.

Several regions

If the journey crosses regions, Polly joins the maps by itself. Every region on the way must be downloaded; if one is missing, the app tells you which one.

Loop: start and finish in the same place

Tap "Loop", choose "Duration" or "Distance", then "Find loops". Polly tries 12 directions around you and offers up to 3 loops, with names like "Ride towards north-east".

Loop sheet with surface Offroad, difficulty Medium and "Find loops".
Duration or distance, then surface and difficulty.
2-hour loop from La Spezia, Offroad without motorways: "Ride towards east" recommended, 2 h 06, 75 km, 20 km dirt, 0.3 km restricted with "tap to view".
Three loops in different directions; restricted km are shown.
  • Duration from half an hour to 8 hours, in 30-minute steps. It starts at 2 hours.
  • Distance from 20 to 300 km, in 10 km steps. It starts at 80 km.
  • Polly tries not to ride back on the same road. If more than 30% of the way back repeats the way out and there is no alternative, it tells you.
  • If the roads around cannot make the length you asked for, it offers the closest loop and says so.
  • With stops, the loop goes through all of them and back to the start.

Discover an area

On the home screen, under "Discover", tap "Area · 3 h". Choose the hours and the dirt difficulty, then "Find areas".

The ride has three parts: a quick transfer by road, a dirt ride in the area at the difficulty you chose, and the way back by road. On the map the transfers are paler, so you see at once where the exploring happens.

  • You get 2 or 3 options that fit the hours you asked for, with the time of each part: "Transfer · Exploration · Return".
  • "Why here?" shows the area's km of dirt split into Easy, Medium and Hard, and the points of interest nearby.
  • The same warnings as other routes apply: restricted sections, seasonal closures for the ride date, last fuel, daylight and weather.
  • If the hours you chose leave too little time to explore, Polly says so and suggests a loop or more time.

Roads you have never ridden

The rides you record stay on the phone, and Polly remembers which roads you have already ridden.

  • The "My roads" layer, in the map layers menu, draws them on the map. It is off by default.
  • Loops and Discover an area have "Prefer new roads", off by default. Switch it on and, among the options that fit your hours and difficulty, Polly recommends the one with the most km you have never ridden.
  • Every result shows how many km of new roads it contains, for example "18 km of new roads".
  • No account and nothing sent: the count is done on the phone, from your recorded rides.

What's nearby

Tap "Nearby": Polly lists places you can reach within an hour's ride, sorted by minutes of riding. The minutes are worked out on real roads, with your surface and difficulty.

What's nearby filtered on Villages: Biassa 8 min, Fezzano 9 min, Valeriano 11 min, Pitelli 12 min, Le Grazie 13 min.
Villages filter: every row shows minutes by motorcycle.
Porto Venere card: village, UNESCO World Heritage, 16 min by bike, 150 m walk from where you leave the bike, "Add as stop" and "Take me here".
The card, with its labels and the two buttons.

Filters: All, Castles, Villages, Cities, Viewpoints, Passes, Nature, Dirt areas, Museums, Food and Sleep. "All" leaves out restaurants, accommodation and museums, so the list stays readable in town.

A place card shows the category, minutes by motorcycle, how far you walk from where you leave the bike, whether you get there on dirt, the altitude, opening hours if OpenStreetMap has them, and labels such as "Borghi più belli d'Italia", "Orange Flag TCI" or "UNESCO World Heritage". From there: "Add as stop" or "Take me here".

Trips of 1, 2 or 3 days

Tap "Trip", then "Explore the area". Say where you start, whether you return there or end elsewhere, how many days, how many hours a day and what interests you. With "Create trip" Polly picks the stops, the breaks and where to sleep.

Explore the area: start from my location, Return here, 2 days, 6 h per day, night 1 chosen by the app.
The form: 2 days, 6 hours a day, the app picks the night.
2-day trip, 274 km, 66 km of dirt, 17 stops: day 1 to Sarzana, 129 km, 3 h 14 in the saddle, 8 stops.
Day 1: km, climb, riding time and breaks.
A stop card (Italian interface): 1,030 m walk from where you leave the bike, reached on dirt, altitude 1,404 m, buttons Keep and Remove.
Tap a stop: "Keep" or "Remove".
Day 2 of the trip back to the start, with its stops and "Navigate day 2".
Day 2, with "Navigate day 2".
  • Hours per day: 2 to 10, in half-hour steps. It starts at 4 hours for one day and 6 for two or three. Hours include riding and breaks.
  • Interests: Villages, Castles, Nature, Viewpoints, Passes, Dirt areas, Cities, Museums and Food. The first six are on by default. With the Road surface, dirt areas disappear.
  • Nights: for each night you pick the town or leave it to the app. The app picks towns and villages with at least one place to stay within 2 km and tells you how many there are, up to "50+ places to stay within 2 km (from OSM)".
  • The result: for each day the route, km, share of dirt, climb, riding time, breaks, night and accommodation. "Navigate day N" starts that day only. "Save" creates one track per day.
  • Changes: tap a stop to remove it, keep it even if it makes the day longer, or on a town choose "Sleep here". Polly recalculates.

Polly accepts a day up to 110% of the hours you chose. If it is still longer, for example because of a stop you locked, it tells you.

What it does not do

  • It does not check opening hours, prices or whether a place has rooms: the app chooses where to stop, you check before you go.
  • It does not use traffic and does not avoid rain: the weather shows in the summary, but it does not change the route.
  • Under 8 km in a straight line it does not look for detours: it offers the direct route.
  • It only plans inside the downloaded regions.
