Questions from the roadside.
Short answers to the most common questions. If yours is not here, write to us (English or Italian).
supporto@pollytrack.comMaps and offline
Does it really work with no signal?
Yes, once the region is downloaded. Map, place search, routing, loops, rerouting, navigation, voice guidance and recording run on the phone, even in airplane mode. Only map downloads and external links (Street View, Mapillary, OpenStreetMap) need a connection.
Which areas are covered?
Italy: all 20 regions, downloaded one by one. If your ride crosses several regions, download them all: routes go across them. There are no maps outside Italy yet.
How much storage do I need?
It depends on the region: from about 130 MB (Molise) to about 940 MB (Lombardy); Liguria about 280 MB, Tuscany about 610 MB, Emilia-Romagna about 630 MB. "Offline maps" shows the size and your free space before downloading; you can delete a region any time.
My download stopped.
It continues in the background and resumes when the connection returns; if it gets stuck, tap resume in "Offline maps". When finished, Polly verifies the package and installs it: if the check fails, it flags it for repair.
How often are the maps updated?
We rebuild the regions from OpenStreetMap data periodically. When a new version is out the app tells you and you can update the region.
Routes and navigation
Why does it suggest closed roads?
Polly does not hide them: it penalises them, colours them magenta, counts them in the route and warns you before you get there. The "Balanced" option often avoids them. Long-press a section and "View the road" tells you why it is closed. The decision and the responsibility stay with the rider: the sign on the ground always wins.
What does "uncertain dirt" mean?
OpenStreetMap says the road is unpaved but not what the surface is like. Polly treats it as Medium and flags it, so you know how many kilometres are a surprise.
An A to B between towns has little dirt.
That is expected: routing tries not to waste time. Try the "Dirt" option, the Offroad surface, a stop in a dirt area, or a loop: they are the best way to find unpaved roads.
Are all speed cameras included?
No. Only fixed cameras mapped in OpenStreetMap; mobile cameras and average-speed checks are missing. Respect the limits anyway.
Does it keep guiding me with the phone locked?
Yes. On Android you see a persistent notification while navigating or recording; on iPhone allow location "Always" if you want guidance with the screen off. Some Android phones close background apps to save battery: if that happens, exclude Polly Track from battery optimisation.
How much battery does it use?
Like any navigator with GPS and the screen on, quite a lot: for long rides, plug the phone into the bike's socket. The screen is the biggest drain.
Can I use it with Android Auto, Apple Watch or CarPlay?
Android Auto, yes: with navigation started on the phone, turn-by-turn shows on the car's screen (the map on the car comes later). Apple Watch, yes: install it from the iPhone's Watch app; it shows the next turn and taps at 200 and 50 m (the watch screens are in Italian for now). CarPlay, not yet: it needs a permission from Apple that we are requesting.
Which handlebar remote works?
One that pairs with the phone as a Bluetooth keyboard (arrows, page up/down, enter, play/pause). With the roadbook open: up and down scroll the boxes, left and right correct the trip by 10 m, page up and down by 100 m, holding enter resets the partial. On Android the volume keys work too; on iPhone they do not, because iOS does not pass them to apps. We have not tested specific models yet: if you use one, tell us how it went.
How do I print the roadbook?
In "My tracks" tap ⋮ on the track, then "Export roadbook PDF" and pick a 145 or 150 mm roll, A4 or A5. The PDF is shared like any file.
Tracks and recording
How do I open a GPX?
From the app or website where you found it, use "Share" or "Open with" and pick Polly Track. GPX (tracks, routes, waypoints) and KML work. The track lands in "My tracks" and you can follow it from the start, from the nearest point or in reverse.
How accurate is the lean angle?
It is an estimate from the phone's sensors, not a bike ECU: good when the phone is steady on its mount. Polly calibrates the mount by itself at the first stop; you can redo it with "Calibrate the mount". If the mount is on the steering handlebar, values are less reliable.
I closed the app by mistake during a ride.
When you reopen it, Polly offers "Recover recording": save, continue or discard.
How do I move my rides to another phone?
From "My tracks", export each track to GPX and open it on the new phone with "Share". There is no Polly account or cloud.
Tips and purchases
Is Polly Track free?
Yes, the whole app, with no paid version. If you want, you can buy a coffee, a beer or a sandwich: inside the app under "Support Polly" (App Store or Google Play) or on this site with PayPal, on the Buy me a coffee page. They unlock nothing.
I tipped by mistake.
Refunds are handled by the stores: for iPhone at reportaproblem.apple.com, for Android from your Google Play order history.

For problems, ideas or map errors: supporto@pollytrack.com. If you can, include phone model, system version, region and what you were doing. Data errors (a wrong road, a closure that no longer exists) are fixed at the source on OpenStreetMap: they reach the maps at the next rebuild.
